Lesson 4: Strategies for
Change
E. Super Agreeable People & How
to Treat Them
IDENTIFYING THE BEHAVIOR
- Playing it safe
- Indecisive
- Always
smiling
- Easier to agree
than to say no
|
- Seeks approval
- Often agrees and
says they will do something, but
then doesn't
- Likeable
|
- May be willing, but lacks personnel,
knowledge, resources or authority
to do the task
- Helpful
|
UNDERSTANDING THE BEHAVIOR
- The need to be liked
by everyone prompts them to make agreements
and commitments they are unable to meet
or don't want to keep.
- Super agreeable
people will do almost anything to avoid
conflict - desperately seeking to avoid
disapproval and anger.
COPING WITH THE BEHAVIOR
- Limit their responsibility.
Don't allow them to overcommit themselves.
- Be specific in your
requests and time limits.
- Point out their
behavior, the consequences of the behavior,
and what specific change in behavior
you want. Allow the person to say no.
Give them a true choice.
- Accept them just
as they are and let them know you do.
- Give honest praise.
- Verbalize your respect
for their opinions, work, and contributions.
- Include them actively
in the decision making process.
- Elicit
feedback. Let them know your approval
is not contingent upon their agreement
with you.
- Encourage them to delegate
more when appropriate.
